Jacqui´s story:

Many years ago in New York, during dinner the night before a wedding, there were a few British and a few Americans eating at the same table. One of the British guest friends on leaving shouted to the American bride: “I am going to bed early tonight, so that tomorrow I will be fresh in the morning to knock you up at seven.” To knock up means wake up in Br. Eng but to make someone pregnant in Am. English. Now you can understand how all the Americans looked at the English groom who did not seem to be embarrassed at having his own wife made pregnant by a friend with notice in advance
